These resources were developed by Children by Choice and WWILD Sexual Violence Prevention and were funded by 100 Women and the Queensland Government – Department of Justice and Attorney-General. They were co-designed with a group of incredible women with intellectual and learning disabilities and informed by consultation with key stakeholders from violence, disability and health-related services. We would like to thank all the women and professionals who helped us with this project, giving their time, expertise and experiences to support the development of this group of resources.
People with intellectual disabilities often receive less relationships and sex education than the general population and may have fewer opportunities to make informed decisions about their bodies and relationships. As a result, they are at increased risk of experiencing sexual or domestic violence.
These resources are designed to support professionals and caregivers in helping people build an understanding of consent, contraception, pregnancy options, and reproductive coercion (RCA). They can also help individuals recognise the warning signs of RCA.
The aim is to support clearer, more accessible conversations about key reproductive and sexual health rights, especially with clients or patients who may have difficulty with verbal communication or comprehension.
We believe that access to accurate, inclusive information empowers people to make the decisions that are right for them.
